Blood: It's in you to give!
by Karly-Jo K
Many generous people, including students from Belle River District High School, donated their blood to the Canadian Blood Service on September 17th, 2008. A pint of blood was taken from each person at the St. Simon and St. Jude Parish Hall in Belle River, Ontario and will be used to benefit those in need.
The spirit of kindness was overwhelming upon entering the hall. The line of cheery-hearted people was surprisingly long but they managed to make their way towards this charity with an inspiring attitude. The nurses were committed to assure a good experience for first-timers. First-time donors had to read copious brochures on blood-related diseases, affirm a healthy status and be between the ages of 17 and 61. It was also essential that the donor had not received any piercing or tattoos within the last six months.
Unfortunately, many students at Belle River District High School could not donate their blood because of the wretched colds making their way through the halls. Karly-Jo Kreitzer was very eager to donate her blood but she developed a cold that very morning. There were several other instances in which the Belle River Nobles weren’t able to donate their blood. Tyler Major could not donate his blood because of the places he had traveled to. Other students confessed to have an anemic disorder that prevented them from donating blood. Kaitlyn Nadalin and her friend, Nicole Caron, agreed they “would have donated if [their blood] wasn’t low in iron.”
The Canadian Blood Service offers the wonderful opportunity to save a life. Every benevolent blood donor has the potential of saving three people. “Donating [blood] is great,” said former student, Anna Rudzinski, “it really helps you become a part of the community.” For more information about The Canadian Blood Service, check out their website at http://www.blood.ca.
