On March 18th, I was lucky enough to be one of the thousands in the Air Canada Center to watch Britney Spears and the Pussycat Dolls live in concert. The show kicked off right on time, with the Pussycat Dolls performing their famous song “Don’t Cha” first. They also preformed many other favourites like “Stickwitu,” “Buttons,” and the new theme song to the movie Slumdog Millionaire, “Jai Ho.” They danced in uniform and used unique props such as mock cages to dance in. The performance was well worth all of their work and the singing was flawless. When they finished on stage, they thanked everyone and shook a few hands before disappearing for the night. They really fired up the crowd and I don’t think any other performance could have pleased so many dedicated Britney Spears fans.

Britney’s circus was about to begin when midgets and clowns came out to set up for the performance. There were jugglers, tightrope walkers, acrobats, unicyclists and body builders. We watched their acts for at least 30 minutes, building up everyone’s anticipation for Britney. Then the curtain fell down around the stage and every single person got to their feet and started screaming. Huge TV screens were filled with circus freaks telling us how much twisted fun we were about to have. Then there was a big bang, and the curtain pulled up. The lights came on and there was Britney, in her red lion trainer suit and whip in hand. At the crack of her whip, she started the performance with the most fitting song, “Circus.” Throughout the show, she was in an array of situations like: being locked up in cages with nothing else to do but dance; floating in the air on an oversized umbrella; being carried around by crowds of men; standing on the inside of a huge picture frame in the air over all of her fans; or being suspended in the air with her only support being two men’s legs. At the end of each song, she would make an extravagant exit, giving the circus acts their chance to entertain us while waiting for her to get ready for the next song. The lighting and special effects were unbelievable. At one point, she was lifted into the air and underneath her was a ring of fire, with flames so tall it seemed they would light her on fire. Everything was timed so perfectly with each act; the whole thing flowed so evenly. Most of the songs she performed were old favourites like “Hit Me Baby,” “I’m a Slave 4 U,” and “Breathe On Me.” No matter what she played, everyone was on their feet and moving. The music was so loud that it felt like it was pumping inside of me and I couldn’t hear a thing afterwards. It was such a great performance that I was literally speechless the next day.
